Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY:Sets up and utilizes all MRI equipment
including imaging coils, patient monitoring systems, and related
articles. Evaluate image quality by troubleshooting scanner or coil
problems and scan parameters. Identifies and compensates for
imaging artifacts. Reviews MRI registration and screening form
thoroughly in order to confirm safe access into magnet room.
Assists in training new MRI technologists and students. Performing
all filming, archiving and PACS network data management for each
patient scanned. Retrieves old MRI data for restoration and filming
or networking. Master new techniques with each subsequent scanner
upgrade. Maintains CE credits and ARRT/NYS license. Communicates
all pertinent patient information to necessary staff.SUPERVISION
AND DIRECTION EXERCISED:As defined in career ladderMACHINES AND
EQUIPMENT USED:Systems: Medical record (eRecord), PACS, Radiology
Information System (RIS), patient transport, communication systems,
web paging, telephone/fax, printers.Equipment: Wheelchairs,
Stretchers, Patient beds, MRI scanners of various platforms, Medrad
Injector, patient transfer assist devices (slider boards, lifts,
hover mats), Point of Care Testing (POCT), where
appropriate.TYPICAL DUTIES:Identifies patient service
requirementsEducates patients/families regarding procedure and/or
treatment to be performed.Prepares patient for radiological/MRI
procedures by positioning patient; adjusting immobilization
devices; moving equipment into specified position; adjusting
equipment controls to set exposure factors.Performs procedures by
following and verifying referring provider's orders.Applies learned
methodologies according to established policy and
procedures.Produces high quality images and prepares/presents them
with other pertinent patient information for timely
interpretation.Prepares and maintains accurate documentation.
Maintains production and quality of MRI images by following
established standards, orders, protocols and proceduresMaintains a
safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors by adhering
to MRI safety policies specific to our MRI Zones Performs and
evaluates equipment quality control measurements.Troubleshoots and
notifies appropriate personnel to maintain equipment performance.At
an advanced level, may train new employees or lead day to day work
activities.QUALIFICATIONS:Completion of formal training in an
approved School of Radiologic Technology. Maintains current NYS
licensure and ARRT certification with CE credits as required.The

Three bands within this position are differentiated by level of
independence, supervision required, certification, ability to
precept new employees in the use of all equipment, and the ability
to lead and meet established departmental goals.Band One (I):
Non-Certified MRI Technologist - Technologists new to the MRI
Department who require training as well as regular direct
supervision or guidance from a more senior technologist. This
generally involves orientation to the Departments infrastructure,
policies, protocols, workflows, procedures and routines. Is
responsible for scanning patients in a safe and efficient manner,
completing all associated paper and computer work, and discharging
the patient from the MRI department with appropriate post MRI
instructions.Band Two (II): Certified MRI Technologist - With
minimal supervision is responsible for scanning patients in a safe
and efficient manner, completing all associated paper and computer
work, and discharging the patient from the MRI department with
appropriate post MRI instructions.Additional duties may include
work on special projects such as new equipment evaluations,
assisting in the design of areas where clinical equipment will be
installed, or assignment to departmental committees.Band Two
requires a minimum of 18 months of progressively responsible
professional work experience in a clinical or hospital environment
with at least 6 months dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences
Department, certification in Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and
capable of performing all MRI competencies including but not
limited to: cardiac, breast, interventional and functional MR if
applicable.Band Three (III): Advanced MRI Technologist - In
addition to the responsibilities of Band Two, serves as a preceptor
in the on-boarding of newly hired Technologists directly orienting
to equipment, imaging routines and procedures, computer programs
and software, as well as departmental and hospital policies. A Band
Three technologist is considered a subject matter expert in
downtime procedures and acts as super-user when new equipment or
programs are introduced to the department. Directly assists in the
mentoring of existent employees by providing one-on-one assistance
in conjunction with the Supervising Technologist. Independently is
responsible for scanning patients in a safe and efficient manner,
completing all associated paper and computer work, and discharging
the patient from the MRI department with appropriate post MRI
instructions.Select Band Three Technologists may be designated as
Leads to support operations on various shifts. Leads may either
assist their shift supervisor, or in the absence of a supervisor,
determine workflow and staff schedule/assignments. Leads may also
provide performance evaluation input to the section supervisor as
well as input to MRI Management to develop departmental goals and
objectives.Band Three requires a minimum of 4 years of
progressively responsible professional work experience as a
specialist in MRI in a clinical or hospital environment with 1 year
dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department preferred.
Technologists must be certified in MRI and satisfy the requirements
and be capable of performing all MRI related duties of a Band Two
Certified MRI Technologist. Band Three Technologists should also be
comfortable operating many of the various platforms that exist
within the UR MRI environment.To be eligible for advancement
consideration, technologist must be in good standing. Readiness for
movement in the bands is assessed by the MRI manager and MRI
supervisor upon successful demonstration of knowledge and task
proficiency as defined in the career ladder. Movement to a higher
band is based on departmental need requires final approval from the
Imaging Sciences Clinical Director of Operations in collaboration
with Human Resources. Employees hired externally with appropriate
credentials and relevant experience may enter the career bands as a
Band Three to serve in a Lead role if the need exists within the

minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual
salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation

expertise of the individual, and internal equity
